On the bayou with Chef Alan and Nancy

The Island of St. Croix meets Cape Coral in this new eatery in Cape Coral called Slate’s, 4820 Candia Street, in downtown. This quaint New Orleans inspired restaurant has exposed brick, a special’s menu hand written on a huge blackboard, white table cloths, and cozy dining. It’s a comfy atmosphere, yet sexy and laid back with low lights, candles in an exciting ambiance. The restaurant is owned by Allan and Nancy Cotter who retired in 2010 to southwest Florida. The story goes – they got bored with all the free time of retirement. So they put their chefs aprons back on and created Slate’s. Their awards in dining are many from their 16 year run as owners of the Blue Moon Restaurant and Jazz Club on St. Croix. Let’s talk about the food. The Panko Crusted Crab Cake is light and crabby with chunks of lump crab meat – it’s the real deal. Also in the Starter’s was the perfectly lightly battered and fried oysters perched atop a tostada. Other items in starters include Spinach Artichoke Dip, Cajun Gumbo and Etouffee. There is a list of about seven salads that include various twists on Caesar, Ahi Tuna Fillet and a house salad. On the dinner menu there was one of everything from steak and pork chops to chicken and seafood items.Of course we tried the Red Beans and Rice. A New Orleans staple. Slow-cooked beans with grilled smoky sausage and the perfect amount of dirty rice. Off the salad menu was Fried Goat Cheese salad with mixed greens, dried cranberries, cucumber and caramelized onion. A house dressing which is a homemade concoction of spicy aioli and a remoulade sauce whipped in to one delicious dressing. To top off our taste buds we paired a sweet white wine with a deconstructed cheesecake ice cream sandwich with blueberry coulis and a caramel and chocolate infused bread pudding that melts in your mouth. Everything is made in-house from scratch. This is a restaurant where you sit; enjoy a sip of wine and conversation. The prices are reasonable and the wine list is varied. There is a special alcove seating for large groups. The décor is mediterranean eclectic. Recommended many times. Go try it.
